last sunday we went strolling around the mountain.
as we walked up to it we heard ominous thumping but it was not until we walked into an enormous cloud of jazz cigarette smoke that i realized that i had come upon a huge bongo drum circle. hundreds of people were sporting dirty ragged tie-dye shirts with pride, dreadlocks of varying composure were twirling and shaking, bongos of all shapes and sizes were being ennthusiastically beaten upon. it was appaling and charming all at once. hippie culture repells me, but seeing people really enjoying themselves is disarming and fascinating. i was told afterwards by a friend on flickr that the whole deal is called a tam-tam.
but then as we started walking through the forest we encountered a rather large skirmish of a different sort. there were mostly dudes done up in different degrees of knightlyness/gothishness running at each other with large padded swords.
this, i was told by the all-knowing flickr buddy, was LARPing (live action role playing). again with the joy and unbridled enthusiam! how can one be anything but in grinning admiration of the choice to do what one enjoys over the pretense of being cool.
yesterday i met up with fellow remixers and all round awesome wranglers david and izzy who took me a-thriftin'. i love meeting up with internet buddies and discovering they're intelligent, fun even better than on the interweb. they even put me on their montreal street style blog which has made me particularly ego-maniacal and self-rightous ever since.
today we went to ikea to get swedish food.
crisp bread (or nakkileipa as it's known in finland) is the best. it's healthy whole grain rye, it never goes bad and it tastes delicious.
we got rodney some chocolate which he's planning to save for christmas when he will briefly take a break from the sugar ban. although its my professional opinion that christmas might come early this year.
and we got urs this toy train. the great thing about going to places like ikea on foot is that you can never leave with more than you can carry.
now we just have to figure out how to turn the heat on in the apartment so i can stop huddling up to my computer tower for warmpth.
Thank god there's no absolute cool in this world. ) Ja aina parempi jos sitä voit tehdä metsässä!
Tänä yönä lähden Berliiniin! Miten jännittävää! But I have to get up at 2:30 am! Flying Ryanair is something like a minor military operation I tell you!
sjw October 15, 2007 12:07 AM PDT yeah, especially after london and the endless parade of ins and outs, it's really nice to see people embracing inner and outer geekinesses, even if they aren't my personal set of dorkiness (although the swordfighting looked like all kinds of fun).
i wish i could go visit berlin with you!
have a really really really great time!
